Why are The Beatles considered the best band of all times? Why are they so iconic?
The Beatles is unquestionably the greatest and the most famous band in world history, according to me. I have listened to The Beatles for as long as I can remember. The Beatles is my dad’s favourite band, I remember listening to them in the car when I was younger, because my dad would always put their cd’s on. I still have all of my twenty two cd’s set on my shelf in my room. I am a big fan of music, and I really appreciate The Beatles.
The band is extremely famous, you can ask whoever you want on the street, and they will all know who the Beatles are. Who knows what the world would be like without The Beatles today. But what makes them so iconic? First of all, it is a fact that they wrote almost all of their songs by themselves. John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the majority of the songs. Some of the many hits Lennon wrote were “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” and “All You need is love”, and McCartney wrote “Eleanor Rigby” and ”Stg Pepper's Lonely hearts club band”, among many others. George Harrison also wrote some famous songs, such as “Here comes the sun” and “While my guitar gently weeps”. The only songs Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr didn’t write were some of the early songs the band released, an example is “Twist and shout”, which still is a big hit. These songs were co-written or written by other people. The uniqueness of a british pop music band writing the majority of their songs was fresh and new, it’s one of the reasons why they are considered iconic.
Even though many of their songs could make you dream, a lot of them were also based on real facts. One famous example is the song “Eleanor Rigby”. There is actually a gravestone marked with “Eleanor Rigby” on a churchyard, not too far away from where Mccartney and Lennon first met. Another song with a title or meaning based on something real is the song “Strawberry Fields Forever”. Strawberry Field was an orphanage for girls in Liverpool that closed in 2005 in the neighborhood where John Lennon grew up. “Strawberry Fields Forever” reflects on Lennons traumatic and difficult childhood, but also on his good memories. There are plenty of other songs which have deeper meanings than you may think which, according to me, makes The Beatles iconic. They affected so many young people's lives and meant the world for many teenagers. They were responsible for the mid 60’s musical british invasion to the USA, The musical british invasion to the USA was when rock and pop music from the UK became popular in the US. Today we are used to listening to british singers. We do not even give it a second thought when we play songs from Adele, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Queen and Amy Winehouse, for example. Since the US is one of the biggest countries in the world, this was a big deal in the 60s. According to “Vocal Media”, a group of fans this big hadn’t been seen since Elvis Presley. The Beatles are a big part of the history of music, their music was in the form of an influencing art, an art that people have not stopped listening to during all these 60 years. 13 albums, 237 released songs.
But what does it really mean to be an iconic artist? For me, it is someone who has influenced many people. It is someone who has chosen an original and new path, in success. Someone who has revolutionised something or groups of people. The Beatles did definitely achieve all this, so if I go with my own checklist, it’s safe to say that they are iconic. They influenced a lot of artists that came after them, such as Oasis, David Bowie and Queen. Also, the way an iconic artist influence people can be in both negative and positive ways. It’s true that when people react strongly to what you’re doing, in a critical way, you're often doing the right thing.
For me, an artist is someone who expresses their emotions or opinions in the form of any creativity, such as painting, creating music or writing, and presenting it to other people. There are so many different types of art, therefore there are so many great ways of being an artist.
The best compliment I can give to the Beatles is that I, together with their thousands of fans, would be nothing without their music. Their music is, was and will always be relevant.
If I would have to give the band criticism I would have to mention the fact that before and during the Sgt Pepper era, which by the way is probably the world’s most iconic album ever made, The Beatles were becoming more and more drug liberal, which might have possibly inspired and influenced young teenagers and adults to follow the same path. There are even conspiracy theories that the song “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” is short for LSD.
This is not a real criticism but many older people were upset with the Beatles for influencing their youngsters to much in different ways. Another thing we cannot blame the band for is the split up. Many people were upset by their split, blaming it on Yoko Ono and John Lennon. The fact is that the band were already on the way to fall apart due to John Lennon and Paul McCartney's strong characteristics and willingness to become solo artists. The split happened in 1969, when John Lennon announced his engagement to Yoko Ono. He announced privately that he would leave the band. If the band wouldn’t have split up, maybe there would be more songs released today, that we could have enjoyed.
The legacy of The Beatles is their great influencing of many things. They influenced british pop and rock music for good, and you can almost say that they created the cultural impact of young adults and teenagers. What I mean by that is that a lot of parents during the 60s and 70s blamed The Beatles for bad influence they had on their children. The drug issue was one thing, but except for that, youngsters were acting rebellious and started dressing differently, due to the fact that The Beatles contributed to the hippie era. This was something new to a lot of people, especially to the older ones. They were also the first band that admitted to using drugs openly, which lead to an acceptance for drug use among young people. This goes back to why they are so iconic. They completely changed the society of the 60’s. I consider The Beatles the most iconic band and artist that has ever existed.
